Christmas Party

Monday the 10th of December saw everyone arrive at the dojo for a reason other than training. It was time once again for our annual Christmas party. As had become a bit of a tradition with our parties we had hired something inflatable to keep everyone amused – this year it was an inflatable ‘jousting’ platform where you struggle to knock your opponent off their podium, whilst trying to stay upright on yours. No surprises it proved to be hugely popular with young and old, with a constant queue of excited potential combatants.

Making a welcome return were the fighting kangaroo suits, which whilst open to all some of our younger members struggled as they couldn’t see out of the neck hole as the suits were too big.

For those of us who wanted a welcome change from hitting each other there was a disco (kindly provided by Helen and Robin) and in the smaller room there was a quieter area for people to chat and enjoy some of the pizza and home baked goodies that were on offer.

It was great to see some of our friends from Selby had chosen to join us. Abi, Dave (and PJ) all came along. Abi has just started working down in Oxford so we don’t get to see her anywhere as much as we would like.

As usual we were touched by the generosity of our members and their families who once again amazed us with donations for raffle prizes. This proved to be a highlight of the evening and I don’t think we have seen anyone as excited as Thomas F to win a light fitting and a box of Tea!

We like to take the opportunity at these events to thank some of the people who have worked hard to make the club the success that it is today. Sensei Ian thanked Sensei Mike for his hard work and dedication in providing the instruction for the club – none of the instructors get paid or take any money for their efforts, but without them the club could not function.

Sensei Mike then managed to surprise Bob with a small token of our appreciation. Bob, as well as helping to man the sign in desk, has become the clubs unofficial photographer and bus driver. He cheerfully offers his help in any way he can. Without the support of parents and family members the club would not be able to provide as many opportunities for our members.

Thank you to Brenda, Lorraine, Helen and everyone else who helped out on the night, or to arrange the party. Thank you to everyone who donated gifts for the raffle and to Sensei Mike and Sensei Ian for making the club the warm family friendly place that we all enjoy so much.

2012 proved to be a very successful year for the club, roll on 2013 as I am sure will be going from strength to strength!

Dojo's Friend

It was no surprise to me, who was taking Dojo home for Christmas!

Having been awarded him in November, Oliver was having so much fun that he didn't want him to leave just yet.
He was determined that he was going to keep Dojo so he made every effort and got those points rolling in.
Oliver was keen to check the points board every session to see who was closing the gap.

This is the first Christmas that Dojo has spent with friends and I'm sure that come the first training day that he will need to shed some of the festive cheer that he will of put on.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a very Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year.

Dojo's Friend

Dojo's very excited friend for November is Oliver.

Oliver only started in September and has quickly shown his competitive spirit.  He was determined that he was taking Dojo home with him......... and he has.

Even though Oliver is one of our younger (and smaller) members, you could never overlook him.  He stands as close as he can, not to be annoying, but so he can make sure he can hear what is being said and asks questions when he is unsure.  His quick smile, politeness and giving nature has made him many friends within the club.  Dojo has guaranteed me that he will take notes on how to behave correctly from Oliver and i will make sure he is equipped with a pen and paper!

Dojo's Friend

Edward managed to catch Dojo's eye for the month of October.

Edward was awarded Dojo for concentrating very hard over the last couple of weeks preparing himself for grading.  This showed as he didn't just grade.....he triple graded!  You might think this has been easy for him, coloured belt, already has practised karate before, but no it hasn't.  Edward has had to forget his old training and focus on a new style.  It is very hard to retrain your mind and body without slipping back into what was familiar and comfortable.  He has managed this fantastically well and it shows great promise for the future.  Well done Edward, now it's time for a little rest and have fun and games with Dojo.

Haxby Karate Kid Gradings

It has been a fantastic week all round for gradings.  H.S.K.C had successful gradings with all their members and now The Karate Kids have finished the week on a high.  21 children entered for gradings and all passed!  We had 10 children going for their first stripe (red).  Even though this was a totally new experience they were calm and focused and showed good form.  We then had 9 going for their yellow stripe and 2 for their green. I should give Edward a mention here as he triple graded to his green, and I'm sure with all the effort and continued enthusiasm  he will go far.

All the children have progressed fantastically and show real promise.  Not only coping with the gradings but with the dedication, commitment( also a big thank you to the parents who bring them) and learning a new language as well!

They have become a team who work and play well together.  They are always quick(ish) to settle down and listen to what is being taught.  Sensei Mike has been very impressed with you all and commented on how you were all becoming well developed Karate ka and looks forward to the day when you move up to the next class.

To say that I felt proud of you all is an understatement, just to be a part of your karate journey has been a privilege and I'm sure that all the other instructors would say the same.

The Adventures Of Dojo Chapter 2

Dojo was lucky enough to visit Evie this month. This is what the pair of them got up to!

Evie decide to widen Dojo's gaming abilities to a game of Dominoes. This was totally new to him but Evie was a fantastic coach and soon had him placing tiles like a pro.  I am led to believe though that Dojo did sneakily peek at Evie's tiles when she left the room. Tut, tut there is no short cuts to being a master and he should know that!

Dojo loves being out and about and he was delighted when they arrived at Creepy Crawlies.  He normally has a fantastic sense of balance, however Gi's and wavy slides are not a good combination as Dojo soon found out!  Luckily  Evie did not have the same problem and was quick to come to his rescue and offered some much needed TLC.

Evie only left Dojo for a moment and look what the cheeky bear got up too!  keeping hydrated is very important when you're hot from running around.  The water was Evie's and she had said that if he needed a drink he could have some of hers,  the Cheddars however! that is a mystery and we're still unsure as how he got hold of them.  All we can hope is that Evie's fantastic manners have rubbed of on him and that he did ask first!

Gradings

On the week commencing 29th October, the club will be grading their Karate Kids.  This is the time to show how well and how much they have learnt.
All the children will be taking part and hopefully putting a new coloured stripe on their belts.
We do these gradings at this stage to prepare the children for the big gradings later on. They will become familiar with the structure and format and learn not to let fear and nerves overwhelm them.
We do not need to wish them luck as they have all proved during training how well they have progressed.

Dojo's Friend

Dojo has chosen a special young Lady to be his friend this time.
The winner for the month of September is Evie.  Evie joined the club in July and rarely misses a session.  Dojo is delighted in the way Evie always listens to an instructor and always tries her hardest.  She watches intently to what is being shown and quickly stands waiting, a little pool of calm, when everyone else is still bouncing around .  Well done Evie, a lesson you have quickly learnt...... to perform well, you must watch and listen first.

Sensei Mike has won and Sensei Ian was nominated for City of York Council's Older People's Champion for Sport and Active Leisure. We are very proud of our instructors who have worked so hard to make the Club a success. Due to injury Sensei Ian does not do as much instructing and training as he would like but he continues to work tirelessly for the Club.

Dojo's Friend

The winner of Dojo's admiration for the month of August is Jamie.  Jamie was awarded his certificate on Monday's training session by Sensei Jim.  Dojo had been impressed by the way Jamie paid attention during lessons.  This has showed by the improvement in Jamie's basics particularly with his mae-geri (front kick) and punches.  Jamie is a keen student who trains twice a week and this had not gone unnoticed by Dojo too.  Well done Jamie for all your hard work and we look forward to all the escapades that you two will undoubtedly get up to.

The Adventures of Dojo

As promised here is the first instalment of "The Adventures of Dojo".  Xander was awarded Dojo in June and this is what the pair got up to...........

Xander ensures Dojo always follows correct procedures.....
even though they may be boring!

Dojo shows that even with paws he is a mean, lean, video game playing machine.

Pole vaulting over gates in the Lake district, can be harmful to ones health!

One of Dojo's friend's pops in for a quick cuppa on his way to the Studio.

After a hard day playing and keeping parents under control, Xander and Dojo take a well deserved rest and a chance to socialise over a class of "jus d'orange et pudding au chocolat."

Xander shows Dojo that emptying ball pits whilst practising Kiai's is easy, and also gives you plenty of space to play as well.

Family Fun Sucess

What a great day! Over 75 people came along to Wigginton Recreation Hall on Sunday for our first Family Fun Day. Everyone had a fantastic time as you can see by these photographs.

The day started with a free taster session for under-eight year olds. The class followed a similar format to the taster session we had run on Friday. Lorraine assisted by Jim, took the class through some games as warm-ups, but which also developed important concepts like always paying attention and being ready to react instantly, in a fun and engaging way.

Jim then took over the instructing for the second half of the class and lead the children through some of the basics of the karate – punching, blocking and having a firm stance. I’m not sure what the children enjoyed more – trying to scare their parents with their KIAI, or trying to push Jim over when he was demonstrating the importance of a long, low, stable stance!

Meanwhile, fun was being had in the main hall where an inflatable assault course and computer martial arts game were on offer. The assault course in particular proved very popular, it felt like there were always at least a dozen children on it!

Outside Adam was preparing the Barbeque, whilst laughing at our attempts to stay on the surf simulator. Some of us were obviously more talented at this than others – Kian in particular seemed to be a natural!

The weather was on our side and it stayed fine for the barbeque which was greatly enjoyed by all. A big thank you to Adam who stepped in to effortlessly cook the entire thing himself. This was complemented by a legion of cakes, flapjack, muffins and ‘ninja ginger bread men’ that had been cooked by club members.

After Lunch it was time for ‘Soak a Shodan’, which (not very surprisingly) proved to be very popular. Club members in particular took great delight in trying to soak Jim, who had (been) volunteered to be soaked. Jack took the prize to the best shot of the day and overall accuracy. Our friends from the Selby club managed to get themselves wetter than they did Jim – perhaps Sensei Paul needs to work on their accuracy with a thrown sponge!

Just after this Ice Cream Van that Brenda had arranged (by chasing it down the street no less!) paid us a visit. This brought a short pause to the fun and games, but once the ice creams had been digested Sensei Mike lead the club members and anyone else who wanted a free taster session through a fun karate class, focusing on kumite applications and sparring games.

All in all it was a brilliant, and very fun day. Everyone who came along appeared to have a great time. Special mention must go to all the children who attended as they were brilliantly behaved, very polite and well mannered throughout the day.

Big thanks to Lorraine, Brenda and Catherine for all their hard work organising the day, and to Adam for manning the barbeque all day.

Plans are already in place for our Christmas party…

Dojo has enjoyed his time with Xander and is arriving back with us next week.  He won't be there long enough to get bored though as it will soon be time for him to visit someone else. Who will it be? There is very little between the leaders and now every point counts, time to stand still, pay attention and try your hardest, and as Dojo is fond of saying..."All good things come to Bears who train hard!"
